How to Perfect the Art of Gift Giving
by Fiona Regalo

The act of giving a gift doesn~t have to be a stressful or
disorganized series of staccato events. With a little
planning and a bit of knowledge, exciting and creative
gifts can be given to just about anyone without the
frenetic steps that are taken by most people in order to
get the job done. The best results will be realized when
some basic guidelines are put into place ahead of time.
The first thing to do is to set up your calendar. By
placing birthdays and other special occasions in their
appropriate slots ahead of time (such as at the beginning
of each new year), and consulting it on a regular basis,
there won~t be the need for rushing and going into a panic
over the sudden realization of an impending gift-giving
event. It~s critical, of course, that you make a habit of
checking your calendar entries at the beginning of each
month, and again at the beginning of each new week, in
order to give your memory a jog. It~s easy to forget or
overlook an occasion when the other events in our lives
demand attention.
2. Focus on gifts that need to be organized in advance.
Once you~ve mastered the art of frequently consulting your
calendar you need to pay special attention to gift ideas
that need to be sorted well in advance. There would be
nothing worse than wanting to get some one a holiday,
tickets to a concert or sports game then leaving it too
late and finding that all the tickets are sold out or your
ideal holiday choice just isn~t available. For some types
of tickets you will have to reserve and pay for them weeks
if not months prior to the event.
Personalized gifts are always appreciated, and show the
recipient that you took the extra time to truly put a
great deal of thought and effort into what you~ve chosen
for them. Simply because something is considered to be a
personalized gift doesn~t mean that it has to be engraved
with their name or significant date. This term simply
refers to making the gift match a particular hobby or
interest that the person enjoys or hopes to enjoy at some
point in the future. For instance, someone who~s known to
be an avid reader might appreciate something new for their
library; the fan of a particular sports team would
certainly appreciate tickets to a game; a person who
collects antiques might enjoy a vintage vase, filled with
fresh flowers from the florist; or, if you know an
individual who has always dreamed of taking dance lessons,
give a gift certificate to a local dance school. In fact,
gift certificates can be given for virtually any type of
hobby or activity that they might be interested in
pursuing.
4. A few more tips for you. Firstly, you want to make
their day as special as possible and to make your gift
have a lasting effect. Therefore buy them something that
they would never dream of purchasing themselves, not just
something sensible you know they could do with. Secondly
if you are wandering around the mall and come across
something that would make a brilliant gift for someone buy
it there and then. You make think you will find something
far more suitable but you rest assured you won~t! Thirdly
be artistic and creative in your gift wrapping ~ it should
be as inspiring as what is inside. Finally, above all
else, be there to give them the present personally. Don~t
double book yourself and book the whole day out of your
diary to be with them. Other things and other people will
just have to fit in elsewhere on your calendar.
It~s not a lot to remember but if you get all of these
things in place buying gifts will become so much more
pleasurable and easy to accomplish when that next date
looms.
