Adoption The Next Best Option
by Robert Lambert

Many of us plan our lives and allocate a slot at the right
time for having children, but more and more often things
aren't quite working to plan and even with IVF many people
are looking into adoption.

The whole process of adoption has changed over the last
ten years and it's now the norm to meet the birth mother
and for the child to continue having some degree of contact
throughout its upbringing. This can put many people off the
whole process because they want to take full control of the
child and not be an unpaid foster parent. The birth mother
will be consulted to see if she is happy with you as
adoptive parents!

Whilst knowing the birth mother can be intimidating for
some prospective parents, for others it makes life easier.
They know the mystery people behind their child and will be
able to answer the child's questions honestly. This will
make the 'coming to terms' process far easier to cope with.
Usually an agency or social worker will be involved in
every meeting and will act as a 'go between'. There are
still some agencies that will organise a totally closed
adoption for you but they are becoming scarce and the wait
for a child much longer.

As the authorities in most countries like to keep children
with their natural mothers for as long as possible it means
that children can be bounced between mother and foster
parents or care homes on many occasions before a final
decision is made. This inevitably means that the children
will suffer.

All of them will have undergone a traumatic time that
could well have long term implications that the adoptive
parents have to deal with. If you already have children of
your own you may find that the language of these children
is colourful and that they will hit before they try to
reason. You may be offered two or even three siblings and
you have to consider the consequences; it could make life
easier or it could make it hell!

You'll need to budget and the costs vary widely. The only
real rule of thumb is that it will probably cost more than
you anticipate! If you're adopting within some countries
it's possible to work independently but you can also fall
on your face doing it this way. Agencies may be costly, but
in the long term, they often work out as the most cost
effective method and it's good to have that level of
support.

Many people are looking abroad for children and because
there are many countries with an abundance of children
available you can find the waiting times are shorter and
the outcome is more certain. The drawbacks include the
paperwork which can be quite daunting if it's in another
language and also other countries will not look kindly on
single people or those who are older. You will also need to
be prepared to pay substantial backhanders to every level
of bureaucracy you encounter.

Make sure that the child is checked medically and you are
aware of any problems. It's quite likely that s/he may be
undernourished and not as forward developmentally as
children of the same age in our country but these are
things that can rectified with TLC.

Make sure that you are prepared for all eventualities.
Speak to people who have gone through the procedure and who
can give you first hand information about what you are
likely to encounter.
