A China Adoption Checklist

Three years ago, my husband and I adopted a beautiful
little girl from China. Many have asked us what it takes
to be adoptive parents to Chinese orphans. Here are the
essentials.
Find someone to represent you who has experience dealing
with international adoptions in general, and Chinese
adoptions in particular. We chose an agency that had a
local representative and a China representative in
addition to their national offices.
Create a simple filing system for paperwork that can be
used easily and quickly. You will need it for the
documents required when applying and when travelling
to China to finalize your adoption.
About six months will pass between the time you submit
your dossier and the time you receive your referral. Use
that time for preparing your home to receive your new
family member. Also bring your immunizations up to date
during this time.
After being notified of your match with a child, quickly
apply for a visa from the nearest Chinese consulate. Also
have your doctor write prescriptions for antibiotics in
the event you or the baby need them. Have the
prescriptions filled before travelling along with those
for any other necessary medications.
Cash and travellers' checks should be in U.S. Dollars. Ask
your adoption representative how much actual cash you
will need, and in what denominations. Handle currency
exchange for day-to-day expenses in China instead of the
U.S.
Baby supplies, except for clothing and medicines, can also
be taken care of in China. You will need much of your
luggage space going over for gifts that you will present
to the various officials that you deal with. Gift-giving
is a Chinese custom, and you need to accept that. Give
gifts that are more likely to be appreciated by the
recipients by selecting items not made or found in China.
When you come back to the States, look into getting a
home-state birth certificate for your child. These are
inexpensive to obtain. Contact an immigration attorney
for details.
Beyond that, all I've ever had to do is love my daughter
and accept the abundance of affection, love, and joy she
offers in return!
