Joys and Importance of Reading
by Connie Leyendi

A recent study revealed that over seventy percent
of high school graduates are unable to read at a twelfth
grade level. Reading is too important a skill not to
be mastered at levels appropriate to one's age and
education. Building value for reading skill is achieved
through cultivating interest in and enjoyment of reading
at an early age.

Start when they are babies. Get in the habit of reading
stories aloud to them. Infants love listening to
their parents~ voices, and you should have no trouble
holding their attention. But, if you do, stop reading
for the day and return to it tomorrow. Another study
showed that preschool children whose parents read aloud
to them on most days of the week for about twenty minutes
scored significantly higher on school exams and
assignments than peers whose parents did not read aloud
to them. Get your little one used to listening to you
read them good books and stories. When older, they will
clamor for it.

Turn reading time into a special event for you and your
child. Make some favorite, healthy snacks (e.g. fruit,
cheese sticks) to share during reading time. Relax and
enjoy a favorite beverage while listening to a
book-on-tape. Ideally, this is an island of calm for
both you and your child in the midst of frantic days.

Create an incentive program. This can take several forms.
You may choose a reading "allowance," computer time,
time off from chores, or anything else that is meaningful
motivation for your child. However, do not give
incentives merely for a high volume of reading; check that
your child understood and retained the substance of what
she read, too.

Show your children the value of reading in your own life.
Put fun magazines (for both you and your children) out
where the children can see and examine them. Check out
classic literature from the local library and allow your
children to see the enjoyment you get from reading it.
Ever hear the expression, "The apple doesn't fall far from
the tree?" Children whose parents value and enjoy reading
tend to value and enjoy reading, too.

Appropriate television viewing and computer use have their
places in your children's lives, but not at the expense
of reading. A combination of firm boundaries around
television and computer time and a good library of
wholesome literature are a prescription for your
children's love of the written word. Check out garage
sales, used bookstores, and thrift shops as sources of
great books at budget prices!
